CHAPTER FIVE

Shark!

The next weekend Amity is very quiet. The beaches do not open.

Hooper goes up and down the shore in Ben Gardner's boat. “I don't think that shark is here,” he tells Brody on Sunday night. “There are other fish near the beaches. And other fish don't stay in the water near Great White Sharks.”

“Maybe you’re right,” says Brody. “But I want the beaches to stay closed.”

On Thursday morning Larry Vaughan calls Brody into his office. Hooper is there, and there are some other important men from the town.

Everybody sits around a table. Then Vaughan says, “Martin, we want you to open the beaches. The town is dying. People are losing their jobs.”

"And what do we do about the shark?" asks Brody.

Vaughan says, “Mr. Hooper will tell us about that."

"I don't think the shark will come back," says Hooper.

"I'm sorry,” says Brody. "I'm not opening the beaches."

Larry Vaughan is very angry. “The people of this town gave you your job. You work for us."

Brody says, “You can have my job any time you want it."

The phone rings on Vaughan's desk. He looks very angry but he picks it up. "It's for you, Martin," he says.

Brody goes outside to take the call. It is from Harry Meadows.

“What's happening?" asks Harry.

“They want me to open the beaches," says Brody. “What should I do, Harry?"

“Open them."

“But why!”

"I think Hooper is right. And Vaughan is going to open the beaches. You can't stop him."

“OK," says Brody. "I'll think about it. Thanks for the call." He puts down the phone and goes back into Vaughan's office.

Brody looks at his old friend. "I'll open the beaches," he says.

“Thanks, Martin."

"I'm not finished. I'll open the beaches, but Hooper will go up and down in the boat. I want everybody to know the danger."

“You can't do that!” Vaughan says.

"I can do it, Larry, and I will."

On Saturday morning, Brody stands on the Scotch Road Beach.

About a kilometer out to sea Hooper is in Ben Gardner's old boat. Brody watches it move slowly to the east.

Brody takes out his radio and says, “Hooper, this is Brody. Is there anything out there?" There was no answer. “Hooper, this is Brody. Can you hear me?"

A short time later Hooper answers. “Sorry," he says. "I thought I saw something. The light is very strong out here."

It is a sunny day. Most of the people on the beach are young. Nobody is in the sea.

A man and woman come over to Brody. They are very fat. Behind them are two fat children.

“Can I help you?" Brody asks.

"Is this the beach with the shark?" asks the man. "I saw it on TV."

“There was a shark here," says Brody. “But it isn't here now. And with any luck, it won't come back."

The family goes away. They are not happy. Brody looks at his watch. It is 12:15.

By 2:30 there are not many people on the beach. Brody walks down towards the water. A boy walks past.

“What are you doing?" Brody asks the boy.

"I'm going swimming."

“Don't stay in the water too long."

"I won't." The boy runs into the water and begins to swim.

Brody watches him swim out a hundred meters.

Suddenly the Flicka begins to move faster. Brody puts his radio to his mouth and says, “Can you see something, Hooper?"

The boat slows and then stops. Another of Brody's policemen hears him speak. “What's happening?" he asks.

“I don't know,” says Brody. Again he says into the radio, “Can you see anything, Hooper?"

“Yes. I can see something," Hooper answers.

“What is it?"

"I don't know... Maybe my eyes are tired."

“There's a boy swimming out there," says Brody. “Where?" asks Hooper. "About fifty meters out. I'll tell him to come in." Brody turns the radio off. Then he puts his hands to his mouth and calls out, “Come in!”

The boy does not hear him. Brody turns on the radio. “Hooper, he can't hear me. Can you tell him to come in?"

“OK,” says Hooper. "I'll be there in a minute."

The boat moves towards the boy. Below the water the shark feels something move in the sea. It turns and follows the boat.

The boy stops swimming. He looks back to the shore.

Brody calls out again, “Come in!” Now the boy hears him and he begins to swim for the shore.

Hooper, in the Flicka, follows the boy. The boy looks back. “What's wrong?" he says.

“Nothing," says Hooper. “Go back to the beach."

The boy swims for twenty meters and then stands up in the water. He begins to walk towards the shore.

Suddenly Hooper cries out, “Shark! Get the boy out! Quick!” The boy hears Hooper and tries to run. He falls into the water. Brody runs into the water, but the sea pushes him back.

The boy moves fast now. He does not see the shark behind him.

“Quick!” says Brody. He runs into the water and pulls the boy out.

The shark goes under again and swims away from the shore.

The boy lays on the beach. "Are you OK?" Brody asks.

"I want to go home," says the boy.

A man from the TV runs up to Brody and the boy. “Can you do that again?" he says. “We didn't get very good pictures."

Brody is very angry. “Go away!” he says. “Everybody go home! I want nobody to go near the water. This beach is closed."

CAPÍTULO CINCO

SHARK!
Tubarão!

The next weekend Amity is very quiet.
No fim de semana seguinte, Amity está muito tranquila.

The beaches do not open.
As praias não abrem.

Hooper goes up and down the shore in Ben Gardner's boat.
Hooper vai para cima e para baixo da costa no barco de Ben Gardner.

“I don't think that shark is here,” he tells Brody on Sunday night.
"Eu não acho que aquele tubarão está aqui," ele fala para Brody no domingo à noite.

“There are other fish near the beaches.
"Há outros peixes perto das praias.

And other fish don't stay in the water near Great White Sharks.”

“Maybe you’re right,” says Brody.
"Talvez você esteja certo." diz Brody.

“But I want the beaches to stay closed.”
"Mas eu quero que as praias fiquem fechadas."

"Na manhã da quinta-feira Larry Vaughan chama Brody para seu escritório.

Hooper is there, and there are some other important men from the town.
Hooper está lá, e há outros homens importantes da cidade.

Everybody sits around a table.
Todos se sentam em volta da mesa.

Then Vaughan says, “Martin, we want you to open the beaches.
Então Vaughan diz, "Martin, nós queremos que você abra as paraias.

The town is dying. People are losing their jobs.”

"And what do we do about the shark?" asks Brody.
"E o que fazemos a respeito do tubarão?" pergunta Brody.

Vaughan says, “Mr. Hooper will tell us about that."
Vaughan diz, "Sr. Hooper vai nos falar a respeito disso."

"I don't think the shark will come back," says Hooper.
"Eu não acho que o tubarão irá voltar," diz Hooper.

"Im sorry,” says Brody. "Im not opening the beaches."
"Sinto muito," diz Brody. "Eu não estou abrindo as praias."

Larry Vaughan is very angry.
Larry Vaughan fica muito zangado.

“The people of this town gave you your job.
"As pessoas dessa cidade te deram teu emprego.

You work for us."
Você trabalha para nós."

Brody says, “You can have my job any time you want it."
Brody diz, "Você pode ter meu emprego a hora que você quiser."

The phone rings on Vaughan's desk.
O telefone toca na mesa de Vaughan.

He looks very angry but he picks it up.
Ele olha muito zangado mas atende.

"It's for you, Martin," he says.
"É para você, Martin," ele diz.

Brody goes outside to take the call.
Brody vai para fora para atender a chamada.

It is from Harry Meadows.
É de Harry Meadows.

“What's happening?" asks Harry.
"O que está acontecendo?" pergunta Harry.

“They want me to open the beaches," says Brody.
"Eles querem que eu abra as praias," diz Brody.

“What should I do, Harry?"
"O que devo fazer, Harry?"

“Open them."
"Abra-as"

“But why!”
"Mas porque!"

"I think Hooper is right.
"Eu acho que Hooper está certo.

And Vaughan is going to open the beaches.

You can't stop him."

“OK," says Brody. "I’ll think about it. Thanks for the call."

He puts down the phone and goes back into Vaughan's office.

Brody looks at his old friend.

"I’ll open the beaches," he says.

“Thanks, Martin."

I’ll open the beaches, but Hooper will go up and down in the boat.

“You can't do that!” Vaughan says.
"Você não pode fazer isso!" Vaughan diz.

On Saturday morning, Brody stands on the Scotch Road Beach.
Na manhã de sábado, Brody está na praia de Scotch Road.

About a kilometer out to sea Hooper is in Ben Gardner's old boat.

Brody watches it move slowly to the east.

Brody takes out his radio and says, “Hooper, this is Brody.

“Hooper, this is Brody. Can you hear me?"

A short time later Hooper answers. “Sorry," he says.

"I thought I saw something.
"Eu achei que eu vi alguma coisa.

The light is very strong out here."
A luz é muito forte aqui fora."

It is a sunny day.
É um dia ensolarado.

Most of the people on the beach are young.
A maioria das pessoas na praia são jovens.

Nobody is in the sea.
Ninguém está no mar.

A man and woman come over to Brody.
Um homem e uma mulher se se aproximam de Brody.

They are very fat.
Eles são muito gordos.

Behind them are two fat children.
Atrás deles há duas crianças gordas.

“Can I help you?" Brody asks.
"Posso ajudá-los?" Brody pergunta.

"Is this the beach with the shark?" asks the man. "I saw it on TV."
"Essa é a praia com o tubarão?" pergunta o homem. "Eu a vi na TV"

“There was a shark here," says Brody.
"Havia um tubarão aqui,” diz Brody.

“But it isn't here now. And with any luck, it won't come back."
"Mas ele não está aqui agora. E com alguma sorte, ele não voltará."

The family goes away. 
A família vai embora,

They are not happy.
Eles não ficam felizes.

Brody looks at his watch. It is 12:15.
Brody olha para seu relógio. São 12:15.

By 2:30 there are not many people on the beach.
Até as 2:30 não há muitas pessoas na praia.

Brody walks down towards the water.
Brody caminha em direção à agua.

A boy walks past.
Um menino passa.

“What are you doing?" Brody asks the boy.
"O que você está fazendo?" Brody pergunta ao menino.

"Im going swimming."
"Eu vou dar um mergulho."

“Don't stay in the water too long."
"Não fique na água por muito tempo."

"I won't." The boy runs into the water and begins to swim.
"Eu não ficarei." O menino corre para a água e começa a nadar.

Brody watches him swim out a hundred meters.
Brody o vê nadar uns cem metros para fora.

Suddenly the Flicka begins to move faster.
De repente o Flicka começa a se mover mais rápido.

Brody puts his radio to his mouth and says, “Can you see something, Hooper?"
Brody leva o rádio à sua boca e diz, "Você consegue ver algo, Hooper?"

The boat slows and then stops. 
O barco diminui a velocidade e então para.

Another of Brody's policemen hears him speak.
Outro guarda de Brody ouve ele falar.

“What's happening?" he asks.
"O que está acontecendo?" ele pergunta.

“I don't know,” says Brody.
"Eu não sei," diz Brody.

Again he says into the radio, “Can you see anything, Hooper?"
Novamente ele diz no rádio, "Você consegue ver algo, Hooper?"

“Yes. I can see something," Hooper answers.
"Sim. Eu posso ver algo," Hopper responde.

“What is it?"
"O que é?"

"I don't know... Maybe my eyes are tired."
"Eu não sei… Talvez meus olhos estão cansados."

“There's a boy swimming out there," says Brody.
"Há um menino nadando lá fora," diz Brody.

“Where?" asks Hooper.
”Onde?" pergunta Hooper.

"About fifty meters out. I’ll tell him to come in." Brody turns the radio off.
"Cerca de cinquenta metros para fora. Eu direi à ele para entrar." Brody desliga o rádio.

Then he puts his hands to his mouth and calls out, “Come in!”
Então ele coloca suas mãos na boca e chama, "Volte!"

The boy does not hear him. 
O menino não o ouve.

Brody turns on the radio.
Brody liga o rádio.

“Hooper, he can't hear me.
"Hooper, ele não pode me ouvir.

Can you tell him to come in?"
Você pode mandar ele voltar?"

“OK,” says Hooper. "Ill be there in a minute."
”OK," diz Hooper. "Eu estarei lá em um minuto."

The boat moves towards the boy.
O barco se move em direção ao menino.

Below the water the shark feels something move in the sea.
Embaixo da água o tubarão sente algo mover-se no mar.

It turns and follows the boat.
Ele vira e segue o barco.

The boy stops swimming.
O menino para de nadar.

He looks back to the shore.
Ele olha de volta para a praia.

Brody calls out again, “Come in!”
Brody grita de novo, "Volte!"

Now the boy hears him and he begins to swim for the shore.
Agora o garoto o ouve e começa a nadar para a praia.

Hooper, in the Flicka, follows the boy.
Hooper, no Flicka, segue o menino.

The boy looks back. “What's wrong?" he says.
O menino olha para trás. "O que está errado?" Ele diz.

“Nothing," says Hooper. “Go back to the beach."
"Nada," diz Hooper. "Volte para a praia."

The boy swims for twenty meters and then stands up in the water.
O menino nada uns vinte metros e então fica em pé na água.

He begins to walk towards the shore.
Ele começa a andar em direção à praia.

Suddenly Hooper cries out, “Shark! Get the boy out! Quick!”
De repente Hooper grita, "Tubarão! Tire o menino! Rápido!"

The boy hears Hooper and tries to run. 
O menino ouve Hooper e tenta correr.

He falls into the water.
Ele cai na água.

Brody runs into the water, but the sea pushes him back.
Brody corre para dentro da água, mas o mar o empurra de volta.

The boy moves fast now.
O menino se move rapidamente agora.

He does not see the shark behind him.
Ele não ve o tubarão atrás dele.

“Quick!” says Brody.
"Rápido!" diz Brody.

He runs into the water and pulls the boy out.
Ele corre para dentro da água e puxa o menino para fora.

The shark goes under again and swims away from the shore.
O tubarão vai para baixo de novo e nada para longe da praia.

The boy lays on the beach.
O menino deita na areia.

"Are you OK?" Brody asks.
"Você está OK?" Brody pergunta.

"I want to go home," says the boy.
"Eu quero ir para casa," diz o menino.

A man from the TV runs up to Brody and the boy.
Um homem da TV corre até Brody e o menino.

“Can you do that again?" he says.
"Você pode fazer aquilo de novo?" ele diz.

“We didn't get very good pictures."
"Nós não tiramos fotos muito boas."

Brody is very angry.
Brody fica muito zangado.

“Go away!” he says.
"Vá embora!" ele diz.

“Everybody go home! I want nobody to go near the water.
"Vão todos para casa! Eu não quero que ninguém chegue perto da água.

This beach is closed."
A praia está fechada."
