Read as much as possible, but not just any book or any article in any newspaper. No, read Graded Readers - specially edited books designed to help English students learn English.

In this episode I read three versions of the same book called “The Lady, or the Tiger?” written by American author Frank R. Stockton. I read the first paragraphs from the original work, in the original English.Then I read the same portions from an elementary-level graded reader, then finally, a third, intermediate-level graded reader. You will see the clear differences between the various levels, and just how you can improve your English vocabulary by reading!

In this podcast I will show you how you can talk about yourself in the past tense using natural and colloquial English. You will learn different ways to talk about your life experiences using the past tense, how to talk about where you are from, where you went to school, things you did when you were younger, how you felt. What is fluency? What is accuracy? What is precision? How do you become fluent? Do you need to become fluent? Who cares if you are fluent or not?

If academics knew the answer to this question, don’t you think they would have already solved the problem of teaching people to speak English fluently? English learners would cease making mistakes and no one would ever have to point and mime and gesticulate to get their point across. But no. Academics and grammarians and linguists have not answered that question. In fact, NO ONE has been able to come up with a good, working definition for what fluency actually is.

In this episode of “Learn English with Josh”, we will discuss what the consensus is surrounding “fluency”, how people try to attain fluency, and what fluency means to English learners on an individual level. And Josh will give you his own personal opinions about fluency, both as a native English speaker, and as someone who has spent the last two decades of his life trying to locate the “holy grail” of second-language learning: fluency.

This was a really fun project that involved many different people at many different levels. Originally, my son's school was studying the effects (negative and positive) of introducing non-indigenous species into an environment. I already knew of a few cases like in Australia with cats and rabbits, which were negative. But coincidentally, I found a video about the reintroduction of wolves into Yellowstone National Park, and the amazing effects they had, not only on the wildlife, but also on the geology of the park. I thought this video would be a perfect thing to use for my son's project, except that it was in English! So, I got the transcript, and had two of my private students use the English transcripts to produce a Portuguese translation, which I then narrated over the original video. The tone of voice and choice of words are more for little five-year-olds than for adults. The final result is what you see above. Yes, I do have an accent in Portuguese. I am not Brazilian!! Enjoy!

Este foi um projeto bem legal que envolveu várias pessoas em vários níveis diferentes. Originalmente, a escola do meu filho estava estudando os efeitos (negativos e positivos) de introduzir espécies não-indígenas em um ambiente. Eu já sabia de alguns casos como o da Austrália com gatos e coelhos, que foram negativos. Mas, de coincidência, eu achei um vídeo sobre a reintrodução de lobos no Parque Nacional de Yellowstone, e os efeitos impressionantes que resultaram, não só na vida selvagem, mas também na geografia do parque. Eu achei que o vídeo seria uma coisa perfeita para o projeto do meu filho, só que estava em inglês! Então, eu peguei a transcrição, e pedi para duas alunas usarem a transcrição para fazer uma tradução em português, que eu subsequentemente narrei em cima do vídeo original. O tom de voz e a escolha das palavras são mais para crianças de cinco anos de idade. O resultado final é o que você vê aqui acima. Sim, eu tenho um sotaque em português. Eu não sou brasileiro!
