CHAPTER EIGHT

Black Eyes

“You're not putting that thing on my boat," says Quint.

The boat is ready to go. Quint has his back to it. In front of him Brody and Hooper stand next to a big cage. The cage is over two meters tall and two meters across.

"Why not?" asks Hooper.

"It's too big," says Quint. "What is it?"

"It's a shark cage," says Hooper. "I want to put it in the water and get into it. I want to take some pictures of that fish."

“No," says Quint. “Not on my boat."

"Why not?"

“Because it's too dangerous. The fish will eat that cage for breakfast."

"I don't think he will. And I want those pictures."

“He says you can't," says Brody. “Forget it. We're going out there to kill that fish."

“You can't stop me," says Hooper.

“Oh yes, I can. The town of Amity is paying for this."

Hooper says to Quint. "I'll pay you."

Quint smiles. “How much?"

"I said no!” says Brody.

But Hooper does not listen to Brody. He says to Quint. "A hundred dollars."

Hooper gives Quint the money. Brody is very angry, but he does not want to lose more time. He says to Quint, “Let's go."

Quint takes the boat out into the sea. Brody sits next to him. "Are we going back to the same place?" he asks Quint.

“Yes. We'll be there soon."

“Will the fish be there?"

"Who knows? But it's the only thing we can do. Sharks are not clever."

Brody remembers the face of the shark. "I don't know," he says. “That fish was clever yesterday.”

“No. He doesn't know what he's doing. Fish do different things sometimes. But I know everything they can do."

“Can you catch every fish?"

“No. But not because they're clever. Sometimes they're not hungry. Or you can give them the wrong fish food."

Quint is quiet for a time. Then he speaks again. “Once," he says, “a shark nearly caught me. It was about twenty years ago. I had a blue shark on the line and he pulled me overboard with him."

"What did you do?"

"I came up fast. I was lucky.”

Quint slows the boat down. Suddenly it is quiet. “OK, Hooper," he says. “Start throwing the fish food overboard."

By ten o'clock there is a light wind. The men sit and watch the sea. They say nothing. Hooper drops meat into the sea.

Brody gets up to get a drink. Suddenly Quint says, “There he is."

Hooper jumps up and says, “Yes! There he is!”

"Where?" asks Brody.

“There," says Quint. “Behind you."

Brody looks out to sea. The shark is forty meters away. "What are we going to do?"

“Nothing," says Quint. "We'll wait. Hooper, drop more fish food in the sea. Let's bring him in here."

Quint picks up a harpoon. The fish swims around the boat. Then it moves nearer.

“Come here, fish," says Quint. “Come here."

But the fish does not come nearer.

"I don't understand," says Quint. “Throw some food into the water. And throw some bottles, too."

"Why bottles?" asks Brody.

“Perhaps he'll swim towards them. We want him to come nearer."

They throw things into the water. The shark moves nearer. Ten meters from the boat it stops. Suddenly its head comes up above the surface.

“Fish!” Quint calls. “Come here. We've got something for you!”

For a short time the shark watches them with its black eyes. Then its head goes back below the water.

"Where did he go?" asks Brody.

"I think he's coming now," says Quint. “Come on, fish!” he says. “Come and get your dinner!” He points the harpoon down at the water.

Suddenly the boat moves below them. The three men fall over.

They get up and look overboard. But there is nothing there.

"Where is he now?" says Brody.

"I don't know," says Quint. “But he'll come back."

“Let's put the cage overboard," says Hooper.

“No!” says Brody.

"It might bring him out. And I want to go down in it," says Hooper. "What do you say, Quint?"

“OK," says Quint. “You paid for it." He puts down the harpoon, and he and Hooper push the cage overboard. The three men look into the water.

“Do you think the fish will come up?" says Brody.

"I think he'll come and look at the cage," says Hooper.

But the shark does not come up. After fifteen minutes, Hooper says, "I'm going down there. Maybe that'll bring him up."

"Wait for the fish," says Quint. “He'll come up."

"I don't want to wait ten years for him, Quint! I don't think you understand this fish."

Quint looks at Hooper. "Are you saying I don't know my job?"

“No. But I think I can kill the fish."

“OK. Go and do it then."

Brody says, "We can't let him go down in that thing."

But Quint does not listen. “Go on," he says to Hooper. “Get in the cage."

Hooper gets into the cage and they drop it overboard. It stops two meters below the surface.

Quint picks up the harpoon.

"Will he be OK?" asks Brody. "I don't think he'll live for ten minutes down there."

“Maybe you're right. But you never know what these fish will do."

"I know, but this is different. This is like putting your hand into a fire."

Olhos pretos

“You're not putting that thing on my boat," says Quint.
"Você não vai colocar aquela coisa no meu barco," diz Quint.

The boat is ready to go. Quint has his back to it.
O barco está pronto para partir. Quint está virado de costas para ele.

In front of him Brody and Hooper stand next to a big cage.

The cage is over two meters tall and two meters across.

"Why not?" asks Hooper.
"Por que não?" pergunta Hooper.

"It's too big," says Quint. "What is it?"
"É grande demais," diz Quint. "O que é?"

"It's a shark cage," says Hooper.
"É uma gaiola de tubarão," diz Hooper.

"I want to put it in the water and get into it.
"Eu quero colocá-la na água e entrar nela.

I want to take some pictures of that fish."
Eu quero tirar umas fotos daquele peixe."

“No," says Quint. “Not on my boat."
"Não," diz Quint. "Não no meu barco."

"Why not?"
"Porque não?"

“Because it's too dangerous.
"Porque é perigoso demais.

The fish will eat that cage for breakfast."

"I don't think he will. And I want those pictures."
"Eu não acho que ele fará. E eu quero aquelas fotos."

“He says you can't," says Brody.
"Ele diz que você não pode," diz Brody.

“Forget it. We're going out there to kill that fish."
"Esqueça isso. Nós vamos lá fora para matar aquele peixe."

“You can't stop me," says Hooper.
"Você não pode me impedir," diz Hooper.

“Oh, yes, I can. The town of Amity is paying for this."
"Ah sim, eu posso. A cidade de Amity está pagando por isso."

Hooper says to Quint. "I'll pay you."
Hooper diz para Quint. "Eu te pagarei."

Quint smiles. “How much?"
Quint sorri. "Quanto?"

"I said no!” says Brody.
"Eu disse não!" diz Brody.

But Hooper does not listen to Brody.
Mas Hooper não escuta Brody.

He says to Quint, "A hundred dollars."
Ele diz para Quint, "Cem dólares."

Hooper gives Quint the money.
Hooper dá o dinheiro para Quint.

Brody is very angry, but he does not want to lose more time.

He says to Quint, “Let's go."

Quint takes the boat out into the sea.
Quint leva o barco para alto mar.

Brody sits next to him.
Brody senta perto dele.

"Are we going back to the same place?" he asks Quint.
"Nós vamos de volta para o mesmo lugar?" ele pergunta a Quint.

“Yes. We'll be there soon."
"Sim. Nós estaremos lá em breve."

“Will the fish be there?"
"O peixe estará lá?"

"Who knows? But it's the only thing we can do.
"Quem sabe? Mas é a única coisa que podemos fazer.

Sharks are not clever."
Tubarões não são inteligentes."

Brody remembers the face of the shark.
Brody lembra da cara do tubarão.

"I don't know," he says. “That fish was clever yesterday.”
"Eu não sei," ele diz. "Aquele peixe foi esperto ontem."

“No. He doesn't know what he's doing.
"Não. Ele não sabe o que está fazendo.

Fish do different things sometimes.
Peixes fazem coisas diferentes às vezes.

But I know everything they can do."

“Can you catch every fish?"
"Você consegue pegar todo peixe?"

“No. But not because they're clever.
"Não. Mas não porque eles são inteligentes.

Sometimes they're not hungry.
Às vezes eles não estão com fome.

Or you can give them the wrong fish food."

Quint is quiet for a time.
Quint está quieto por um tempo.

Then he speaks again.
Então ele fala de novo.

“Once," he says, “a shark nearly caught me.
"Uma vez," ele diz, "um tubarão quase me pegou.

It was about twenty years ago.
Foi há uns vinte anos atrás.

I had a blue shark on the line and he pulled me overboard with him."

"What did you do?"
"O que você fez?"

"I came up fast. I was lucky.”
"Eu subi rápido. Eu fui sortudo."

Quint slows the boat down.
Quint desacelera o barco.

Suddenly it is quiet. “OK, Hooper," he says.
De repente há um silêncio. "Ok, Hooper," diz ele.

“Start throwing the fish food overboard."
"Comece a jogar a comida de peixe ao mar."

By ten o'clock there is a light wind.

The men sit and watch the sea. They say nothing.

Hooper drops meat into the sea.
Hooper joga carne na água.

Brody gets up to get a drink.
Brody se levanta para pegar uma bebida.

Suddenly Quint says, “There he is."
De repente Quint diz, "Lá está ele."

Hooper jumps up and says, “Yes! There he is!”
Hooper salta para cima e diz, "Sim! Lá está ele!"

"Where?" asks Brody.
"Onde?" pergunta Brody.

“There," says Quint. “Behind you."
"Lá," diz Quint. "Atrás de você."

Brody looks out to sea.
Brody olha para o mar.

The shark is forty meters away.

"What are we going to do?"
"O que nós vamos fazer?"

“Nothing," says Quint.
"Nada," diz Quint.

"We'll wait. Hooper, drop more fish food in the sea.
"Nós vamos esperar. Hooper, jogue mais comida de peixe no mar.

Let's bring him in here."
Vamos trazê-lo aqui."

Quint picks up a harpoon.
Quint pega um arpão.

The fish swims around the boat.
O peixe nada em volta do barco.

Then it moves nearer.
Depois ele se aproxima.

“Come here, fish," says Quint. “Come here."
"Vem aqui, peixe," diz Quint. "Vem aqui."

But the fish does not come nearer.
Mas o peixe não vem mais perto.

"I don't understand," says Quint.
"Eu não entendo," diz Quint.

“Throw some food into the water. And throw some bottles, too."
"Jogue alguma comida na água. E jogue algumas garrafas, também."

"Why bottles?" asks Brody.
"Por que garrafas?" pergunta Brody.

“Perhaps he'll swim towards them.
"Talvez ele nadará em direção à elas.

We want him to come nearer."
Nós queremos que ele venha mais perto."

They throw things into the water.

Eles jogam coisas na água.

The shark moves nearer.
O tubarão se aproxima.

Ten meters from the boat it stops.
A dez metros do barco ele para.

Suddenly its head comes up above the surface.

“Fish!” Quint calls. “Come here. We've got something for you!”
"Peixe!" Quint chama. "Vem aqui. Nós temos algo para você!"

For a short time the shark watches them with its black eyes.

Then its head goes back below the water.

"Where did he go?" asks Brody.
"Onde ele foi?" pergunta Brody.

"I think he's coming now," says Quint.
"Eu acho que ele está vindo agora," diz Quint.

“Come on, fish!” he says. “Come and get your dinner!”
"Vamos, peixe!" ele diz. "Vem e pegue seu jantar!"

He points the harpoon down at the water

Ele aponta o arpão para a água.

Suddenly the boat moves below them.

The three men fall over.
Os três homens caem.

They get up and look overboard.
Eles levantam e olham para o mar.

But there is nothing there.
Mas não há nada lá.

"Where is he now?" says Brody.
"Onde ele está agora?" diz Brody.

"I don't know," says Quint. “But he'll come back."
"Eu não sei," diz Quint. "Mas ele voltará."

“Let's put the cage overboard," says Hooper.
"Vamos botar a gaiola no mar," diz Hooper.

“No!” says Brody.
"Não!" diz Brody.

"It might bring him out.
"Isso pode trazê-lo para fora (atraí-lo).

And I want to go down in it," says Hooper.
E eu quero descer dentro dela," diz Hooper.

"What do you say, Quint?"
"O que você diz, Quint?"

“OK," says Quint.
"Ok," diz Quint.

“You paid for it."
"Você pagou por isso."

He puts down the harpoon, and he and Hooper push the cage overboard.
Ele coloca o arpão no chão, e ele e Hooper empurram a gaiola ao mar.

The three men look into the water.
Os três homens olham para a água.

“Do you think the fish will come up?" says Brody.
"Você acha que o peixe virá para cima?" diz Brody.

"I think he'll come and look at the cage," says Hooper.
"Eu acho que ele virá e olhará para a gaiola," diz Hooper.

But the shark does not come up.
Mas o tubarão não sobe.

After fifteen minutes, Hooper says, "I'm going down there.
Após quinze minutos, Hooper diz, "Eu vou descer lá.

Maybe that'll bring him up."
Talvez isso o trará para cima."

"Wait for the fish," says Quint. “He'll come up."
"Espere pelo peixe," diz Quint. "Ele vai subir."

"I don't want to wait ten years for him, Quint!
"Eu não quero esperar dez anos por ele, Quint!

I don't think you understand this fish."

Quint looks at Hooper. "Are you saying I don't know my job?"

“No. But I think I can kill the fish."
"Não. Mas eu acho que eu consigo matar esse peixe."

“OK. Go and do it then."
"Ok. Vá e o faça então."

Brody says, "We can't let him go down in that thing."
Brody diz, "Nós não podemos deixar ele descer naquela coisa."

But Quint does not listen.
Mas Quint não ouve.

“Go on," he says to Hooper. “Get in the cage."
"Vai," ele diz para Hooper. "Entre na gaiola."

Hooper gets into the cage and they drop it overboard.

It stops two meters below the surface.

Quint picks up the harpoon.
Quint pega o arpão.

"Will he be OK?" asks Brody.
"Ele estará ok?" pergunta Brody.

"I don't think he'll live for ten minutes down there."
"Eu não acho que ele viverá por dez minutos lá embaixo."

“Maybe you're right. But you never know what these fish will do."
"Talvez você esteja certo. Mas você nunca sabe o que esses peixes farão."

"I know, but this is different.
"Eu sei, mas isso é diferente.

This is like putting your hand into a fire."
