Crazy English Pronunciation (Pronúncia louca em inglês)

English pronunciation, let’s face it, is pretty ridiculous! English pronunciation is crazy, it’s chaotic, it’s nonsensical! It’s not its own fault, though! Blame the Vikings in the 8th century and the Norman French in the 12th century. And we can also blame the Anglos, the Saxons and the Jutes for having the audacity to leave the comfort of their own homes to go to England in the first place. We might as well thank the Romans for fleeing England to allow those tribes in anyway!

Enough complaining, though! History be damned! Your job is to learn English pronunciation, in all its craziness and chaos and nonsensicality! So, listen to this video as many times as you need. Go to my website (www.inglesessencial.com) and find the excerpt of the poem in its entirety so you can follow along. But one piece of advice I can give you for sure: NEVER GIVE UP! Keep practicing, and keep going! Good luck!

Learn English with Josh Podcast - Episode 8: "Half a dozen French penises, please."

What happens when someone learning English makes a terrible mistake or mispronounces something that results in a tremendous social disaster? Does it make people laugh or does it make them run away in embarrassment? According to cognitive psychologist and linguist Steven Pinker, “...you and I belong to a species with a remarkable ability: we can shape events in each other's brains with exquisite precision. That ability is language. Simply by making noises with our mouths, we can reliably cause precise new combinations of ideas to arise in each other's minds.” But what happens when those noises are wrong?

In this episode, Josh talks about his experiences as an English teacher and some of the more hilarious mistakes that his students have made, and how he thinks it’s healthy just to laugh at all the comic mistakes. After all, learning a new language, especially English which is full of exceptions to the exceptions to the rules, is a precarious journey, so let’s have fun along the way, shall we?
