Chapter Two

DOBBY’S WARNING

Harry tries not to scream in surprise! He covers his mouth just in time! The “someone” sitting on his bed is a strange little creature. It has huge ears, like the wings of a bat, and large green eyes that are as big as tennis balls!

Downstairs in the living room, Harry can hear uncle Vernon and aunt Petunia talking to their guests. The creature jumps off the bed and comes towards Harry. The creature looks like it is wearing an old pillowcase for clothes. There are holes in the pillowcase for its arms and legs.

“Er - hello,” says Harry nervously. “Harry Potter!” says the creature. It has a very high voice. It is talking very loudly - the Dursleys are sure to hear! “Dobby has been waiting so long to meet you, sir. It is an honor, it is!” the creature says.

“Th-thank you, I guess,” says Harry. Harry wants to ask, “what are you”, but he thinks that is rude. So, he asks, “Who are you?”

“I’m Dobby, sir. Just Dobby. I’m a house-elf,” says the creature. “Em, I don’t want to be rude,” says Harry, “but this is not the best time for you to be here. I’m very happy to meet you, but, could you tell me why you’re here?”

The creature looks around as if it is scared. “Dobby is in terrible danger being here. He should not have come to see you! Dobby will punish himself for disobeying his master! Dobby will put his head in the oven and close the door on his head!”

Suddenly the creature jumps up and begins hitting its head against the wall, over and over again. He is making a terrible noise! Harry listens. The conversation downstairs is silent. “Please, what are you doing? Stop that noise!” Harry yells at the creature.
