CHAPTER TWO
A Sheep
I was not hurt. But I could not start the plane again. I was alone in the desert and I did not have much water. I had to work on the plane quickly. That night, I slept on the sand.
Then, the next morning, I was very surprised. I woke up and I heard a voice. “Draw me a sheep, please!” said the voice.
“What?” I said.
“I want you to draw me a sheep,” said the voice.
I opened my eyes and I jumped up. A boy with golden hair stood next to me.
I was very surprised to see him because we were in the middle of a desert in Africa. We were alone in a desert, but he did not look frightened.
This is my picture of the boy. (It is not very good. I never learned to draw very well.)
“What are you doing here?” I said. It was difficult to speak because I was surprised.
He laughed quietly, but he did not answer me. He said again, “Please, draw me a sheep.”
“I’m good at lots of things, but I’m not very good at drawing,” I said.
“It doesn’t matter,” he said, slowly. “You can draw me a sheep.”
“I can’t draw sheep,” I said, “but I can draw this.” I drew him my Picture Number One – the drawing of the snake with the whole elephant inside it.
“No! No! I don’t want a picture of an elephant inside a snake,” he said. “At home, everything is very small and elephants are too big. I need a sheep.” Then he said again, “Draw me a sheep.”
Again, I was very surprised and I drew a sheep.
He looked at it, then he said, “No! This sheep doesn’t look very well. Try again.”
I drew a second sheep.
The boy looked at it and he smiled. “This isn’t a sheep,” he said. “This is a ram – I can see the horns on its head. Try again.”
I drew the sheep again and I did not put any horns on its head.
But he did not like that drawing because the sheep looked too old. "I want a young sheep," he said. "I want the sheep to live for a long time."
I did not want to draw another picture because I wanted to work on my plane. Then I thought hard, and I drew this picture very quickly.
"The sheep lives in the box," I said to him.
He looked closely at the picture. Then I was surprised because he laughed. "This is very good," he said. "Will the sheep eat a lot of grass?"
"Why?" I asked.
"Because at home everything is very small and there isn't much grass," he said.
"It'll be fine," I said. "The sheep is very small."
He looked again at the picture and he said, "She's small, but she isn't very small," he said. Then he said "Look! She's sleeping."
I thought, "The boy understands my pictures."

Capítulo Dois
A Sheep
Uma ovelha

Eu não estava machucado. Mas eu não podia ligar o avião de novo. Eu estava sozinho no deserto e eu não tinha muita água. Eu tinha que trabalhar no avião rapidamente. Aquela noite, eu dormi na areia.
Then, the next morning, I was very surprised. I woke up and I heard a voice. “Draw me a sheep, please!” said the voice.
Então, na manhã seguinte, eu estava (fiquei) muito surpreso. Eu acordei e ouvi uma voz. "Me desenhe uma ovelha, por favor!" disse a voz.
“What?” I said.
Ô que?" Eu disse.
“I want you to draw me a sheep,” said the voice.
"Eu quero que você me desenhe uma ovelha"” disse a voz.
I opened my eyes and I jumped up. A boy with golden hair stood next to me.
Eu abri meus olhos e eu pulei para cima. Um menino com cabelos dourados estava em pé ao lado de mim.
I was very surprised to see him because we were in the middle of a desert in Africa. We were alone in a desert, but he did not look frightened.
Eu estava muito surpreso de vê-lo porque nós estávamos no meio de um deserto na África. Nós estávamos sozinhos num deserto, mas ele não parecia ter medo.
This is my picture of the boy. (It is not very good. I never learned to draw very well.)
Esse é o meu desenho do menino. (Não é muito bom. Eu nunca aprendi a desenhar muito bem.)
“What are you doing here?” I said. It was difficult to speak because I was surprised.
"O que você está fazendo aqui?" Eu disse. Era difícil falar porque eu estava surpreso.
He laughed quietly, but he did not answer me. He said again, “Please, draw me a sheep.”
Ele riu baixinho, mas ele não me respondeu. Ele disse de novo, "Por favor desenha-me uma ovelha."
“I’m good at lots of things, but I’m not very good at drawing,” I said.
"Eu sou bom em muitas coisas, mas não sou muito bom em desenhar," eu disse.
“It doesn’t matter,” he said, slowly. “You can draw me a sheep.”
"Não importa,"ele disse, devagar. "Você consegue me desenhar uma ovelha."
“I can’t draw sheep,” I said, “but I can draw this.” I drew him my Picture Number One – the drawing of the snake with the whole elephant inside it.
"Eu não posso desenhar ovelhas, "eu disse, mas eu posso desenhar isso." Eu desenhei para ele meu Desenho Número Um - o desenho da cobra com o elefante inteiro dentro dele.
“No! No! I don’t want a picture of an elephant inside a snake,” he said. “At home, everything is very small and elephants are too big. I need a sheep.” Then he said again, “Draw me a sheep.”
"Não! Não! Eu não quero um desenho de um elefante dentro de uma cobra," ele disse. "Em casa, tudo é muito pequeno e elefantes são grandes demais (muito grandes). Eu preciso de uma ovelha." Então ele disse de novo, "Desenhe-me uma ovelha."
Again, I was very surprised and I drew a sheep.
Novamente, eu estava surpreso e desenhei uma ovelha.
He looked at it, then he said, “No! This sheep doesn’t look very well. Try again.”
Ele olhou para ela, e então ele disse, "Não! Essa ovelha não parece estar muito bem. Tente de novo."
I drew a second sheep.
Eu desenhei uma segunda ovelha.
The boy looked at it and he smiled. “This isn’t a sheep,” he said. “This is a ram – I can see the horns on its head. Try again.”
O menino olhou para ela e ele sorriu. "Isso não é uma ovelha," ele disse. “Isso é um carneiro - eu posso ver os chifres na sua cabeça. Tente de novo."

But he did not like that drawing because the sheep looked too old. "I want a young sheep," he said. "I want the sheep to live for a long time."
Mas ele não gostou daquele desenho porque a ovelha parecia muito velha. "Eu quero uma ovelha jovem," ele disse. "Eu quero que a ovelha viva por muito tempo.'’
I did not want to draw another picture because I wanted to work on my plane. Then I thought hard, and I drew this picture very quickly.
Eu não queria desenhar outra figura porque eu queria trabalhar no meu avião. Então eu pensei bastante, e eu desenhei essa figura muito rapidamente.
"The sheep lives in the box," I said to him.
"A ovelha vive na caixa," eu disse para ele.
He looked closely at the picture. Then I was surprised because he laughed. "This is very good," he said. "Will the sheep eat a lot of grass?"
Ele olhou de perto para o desenho. Então eu fiquei surpreso porque ele riu. “Esse está muito bom," ele disse. "A ovelha vai comer muita grama?"
"Why?" I asked.
"Porque?" eu perguntei.
"Because at home everything is very small and there isn't much grass," he said.
"Porque em casa tudo é muito pequeno e não tem muita grama," ele disse.
"It'll be fine," I said. "The sheep is very small."
"Ela vai ficar bem," eu disse. "A ovelha é muito pequena."
He looked again at the picture and he said, "She's small, but she isn't very small," he said. Then he said "Look! She's sleeping.”
Ele olhou de novo para o desenho e ele disse, "Ela é pequena, mas ela não é muito pequena," ele disse. Então ele disse "Olhe! Ela está dormindo."
I thought, "The boy understands my pictures."
Eu pensei, "O menino entende meus desenhos."
